The speed ratio of a single-stage harmonic gear drive ranges from 70 to 320, and in certain applications it can reach as high as 1,000; multi-stage drives can achieve ratios exceeding 30,000. It is suitable not only for speed reduction but also for speed increase.

  (1) Large transmission ratio. The transmission ratio of a single-stage harmonic gear drive ranges from 70 to 320, and in certain applications it can reach as high as 1,000; multi-stage drives can achieve ratios exceeding 30,000. It is suitable not only for speed reduction but also for speed increase.

  (2) High load-carrying capacity. This is due to the large number of teeth simultaneously in mesh in harmonic gear drives; in a two‑wave drive, the number of engaged teeth can exceed 30% of the total tooth count. Moreover, the flexspline is made from high‑strength materials, and the teeth engage via surface contact.

  (3) High transmission accuracy. This is due to the large number of teeth simultaneously in mesh in harmonic gear drives, which averages out errors; in other words, multi‑tooth engagement provides mutual error compensation, resulting in high precision. Under the same gear accuracy class, the transmission error is only about one‑quarter that of conventional cylindrical gear drives. Moreover, by slightly adjusting the radius of the wave generator, the flexspline can be deformed further, reducing backlash to a very small level—indeed, enabling backlash‑free meshing. Consequently, harmonic gear reducers exhibit minimal backslash and are well suited for reverse‑rotation applications.

  (4) High transmission efficiency and smooth motion. Because the flexspline teeth undergo uniform radial displacement during transmission, even at high input speeds, the relative sliding velocity of the teeth remains low—only about one percent of that in conventional involute gear drives. Consequently, tooth wear is minimal, and efficiency is high, reaching 69% to 96%. Moreover, since both sides of the gear are engaged during meshing and disengagement, there is no impact, resulting in smooth operation.

  (5) Simple structure, few parts, and easy installation. With only three basic components and coaxial input and output shafts, the design is straightforward and installation is convenient.

  (6) Compact size and light weight. Compared with conventional gear reducers, at the same output torque, harmonic gear reducers can reduce in volume by two-thirds and in weight by one-half.

  (7) It can transmit motion into enclosed spaces. Leveraging the flexibility of the flexspline, this valuable advantage of worm gear drives is unmatched by other existing transmission types.
