Torque motors and harmonic reducers are both widely used drive devices, yet they are two distinct types of equipment. They differ in their operating principles, application scenarios, and performance characteristics. So what exactly are these differences?

Torque motors and harmonic reducers are both widely used drive devices, yet they are distinct types of machinery. They differ in their operating principles, application scenarios, and performance characteristics. So what exactly sets them apart? Today, a leading manufacturer of harmonic reducers will explain the key differences between torque motors and harmonic reducers—let’s take a closer look. A torque motor, also known as a torque‑output motor, is specifically designed to deliver high torque. According to harmonic reducer manufacturers, it is a specialized motor that features soft mechanical characteristics and an exceptionally wide speed‑regulation range. As a type of multi‑stage special motor, it can maintain continuous operation even at very low speeds or under stalled conditions—when the rotor cannot turn—without sustaining damage. In this operating mode, the motor can provide a stable torque to the load, which is why it is called a “torque motor.”

Torque motors have a donut‑shaped structure and are classified into three types: outer‑rotor motors, in which the rotor is on the outer circumference and the stator is on the inner circumference; inner‑rotor motors, with the stator on the outer circumference and the rotor on the inner circumference; and inner‑rotor motors, where the rotor is positioned inside. According to manufacturers of harmonic reducers, because outer‑rotor motors can generate higher torque at the same dimensions, they are commonly employed in such applications. Their key characteristic is the ability to deliver substantial torque over short periods, making them well suited for scenarios requiring startup or driving heavy loads—such as lifting equipment, machine tools, textile machinery, wire and cable production, metalworking, papermaking, rubber processing, plastics manufacturing, and printing equipment. Torque motors typically use DC motors or induction motors as their drive sources, increasing output torque by either boosting magnetic field strength or altering winding connections. While torque motors generally exhibit high torque (current ratio), their rotational speeds tend to be relatively low, with a limited speed‑adjustment range.

By contrast, a harmonic drive is a type of motor that incorporates a reduction mechanism on the motor’s output shaft. Its primary function is to lower the output speed while increasing the output torque. Harmonic drive manufacturers typically use DC motors, induction motors, or stepper motors as the drive source and employ reduction mechanisms—such as gears, belts, or worm gears—to achieve speed reduction. The gear ratio of a harmonic drive can be selected according to specific requirements, enabling a range of output speeds. Harmonic drives are well suited for applications that demand precise speed control and high torque, such as automated equipment and robotic arms. From an application perspective, torque motors are more appropriate for scenarios involving the startup or driving of heavy loads, whereas harmonic drives are primarily used when it is necessary to reduce speed and deliver substantial torque. Torque motors can provide high starting torque at startup, allowing them to quickly accelerate heavy loads, while harmonic drives rely on their reduction mechanism to slow the output shaft and boost output torque, making them ideal for applications requiring precise speed control at higher rotational speeds. In terms of performance characteristics, torque motors generally offer higher torque (current‑to‑torque ratio), but they have lower output speeds and a limited speed‑adjustment range.
